We are living in incredibly uncertain times — businesses closing, working from home, and online school. With that being said, it’s important to take some time to yourself! Before the hustle and bustle of the school year kicks in, everyone needs some well-deserved relaxation. What better day to relax than August 15th, aka National Relaxation Day! Here are some ways you can celebrate so that you feel rejuvenated.
Spend Some Time Outside
One of the best ways to relieve stress is by spending some time outside. Whether you go for a bike ride or a walk, or simply lounge in the sun, you’ll feel relaxed simply being in nature. In fact, according to the American Institue of Stress, nature excursions can improve mental health, alleviating time pressures and other mental stressors. Put the world away for a bit and explore your natural surroundings. Perhaps you can head to the mountains or the ocean, or simply walk around a local park!
Spruce Up Your Space
It’s important to dedicate a space in your home to relaxation, whether it’s the living room, your bedroom, or even just a corner of your bedroom. If you don’t have a space like this, perhaps you can take some time on National Relaxation Day to make one! Fill it with items that make you feel relaxed —fuzzy blankets, fluffy pillows, candles, or incense. Once it’s complete, every time you go to this space it will be associated with relaxing. It’s essential to have a quiet space like this!
Create an At-Home Spa
While you could go to a spa, why not try making one at home? Not only is it much cheaper, but then you can make your spa day exactly how you like it. Stock up on face masks, lotion, bubble bath, and more. Additionally, you could give yourself a manicure and a pedicure! There are plenty of ways to treat yourself from the comfort of your own home.
Read, Journal, or Color
When was the last time you sat down to read a good book? Or jot down your thoughts into a journal? Or even colored in a coloring book? All of the above are incredibly therapeutic activities, and all of them are great habits to get into. You can really journal about anything, but if you aren’t sure where to start, you could write down a few things you’re grateful for each day or things that made you happy that day. In terms of coloring books, they actually make plenty specifically for adults! In fact, according to Beaumont, coloring has the same impact on your brain as meditating, allowing for quiet time and mindfulness. You can find adult coloring books on Amazon or at your local Barnes & Noble. No matter how you decide to spend your time, all of these are relaxing activities.
Spend Time with Loved Ones
Another simple way to relax is by spending time with your loved ones, whether that’s in person, via video chat, or on the phone! Pick up the phone and call your best friend or your parents. Or, spend some time with your significant other or children. (As long as they don’t stress you out! Remember, you’re supposed to be relaxing!) It’s important to spend time with those who make you happy, and doing so can significantly improve your mood.
There are many different ways to relax, whether you enjoy a day outdoors or pick up a good book. How will you spend National Relaxation Day? Take some time for yourself, and do whatever helps you unwind! For tips on how to manage stress, check out our blog, Stress Awareness Month: Take Care of Your Mental Health.
