What is HIIT?
Have you heard of HIIT exercise? The acronym stands for “High Intensity Interval Training,” and the popularity of CrossFit (a type of HIIT exercise) is a sign of its value. To learn more about HIIT and understand the hype surrounding CrossFit, keep reading.
HIIT is a type of cardiovascular exercise that alternates short periods of extremely rigorous activity with shorter periods of less demanding activity. These intervals are repeated (high activity followed by low activity followed by high activity again) until participants are too tired to continue the workout. Due to the intense nature of HIIT, workouts rarely exceed thirty minutes.
In HIIT workouts, participants give 100% effort during the high activity periods and “recover” during the low activity periods. By doing so, they temporary decrease their oxygen intake, creating an oxygen shortage. After the workout, their bodies take in more oxygen than usual to make up for the shortage. This excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) helps participants burn fat and calories quickly.
Benefits of HIIT
There are several benefits to HIIT exercise. First, the workouts are much quicker than those of other exercise regimens. These quick, high intensity workouts offer an ideal solution for busy people who don’t have hours to dedicate to the gym but still want to see improvements in their fitness. HIIT requires minimal equipment, and you can incorporate a wide variety of activities into a workout– including swimming, cycling, running, and bodyweight training. Finally, HIIT exercise has been said to build muscle, improve metabolism, lower blood pressure, and improve cholesterol profiles.
