Everyone knows about Independence Day, but can you name another holiday celebrated in July? If the question has you scratching your head, then keep reading for a list of holidays worth celebrating.

Independence Day

Wednesday, July 4
In the United States, this holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. This document changed history by severing ties between the thirteen colonies and the British Empire and making the United States a sovereign nation. The holiday has been federally recognized since 1941, and the original copy of the Declaration of Independence is housed in the National Archives in Washington, DC.

National Ice Cream Day

Sunday, July 15
Did you know there is a day all for this creamy, frozen dessert? President Ronald Reagan signed this holiday into law in 1984. Call your local ice cream shop in order to see what specials they have for the day.

Mandela Day

Wednesday, July 18
Mandela Day celebrates Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa and famous anti-Apartheid activist. Apartheid was a government system built upon the disenfranchisement and abuse of non-white South Africans. The Apartheid regime jailed Mandela for twenty-seven years for his activism. As a result, the holiday takes place on his birthday each year.

Parents’ Day

Sunday, July 22
This holiday celebrates the important role parents play in the lives of children and society as a whole. Thank all the parental figures who made you the person you are today. Make sure to not only do this today, but everyday!

National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day

Friday, July 27
July 1998 was the 45th anniversary of the treaty that ended the Korean War. In order to honor this event, President Bill Clinton created a holiday commemorating American lives lost in the conflict. Since then, memorial services occur around the country on this day. A wreath-laying ceremony occurs annually at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Additionally, flags fly at half-staff as a symbol of respect.

With all of these holidays in July, you’ll have a reason to celebrate all month long!
