Summer is coming to a close, but the next season is just as packed with meaningful observances, celebrations, and calls to action. Here is a list of all the holidays in September coming up.
Everyone has heard of this federal holiday. It celebrates American workers whose passion, talent, and indignation have moved the country forward year after year.
Carl Garner Federal Lands Cleanup Day
This holiday encourages citizens to be good stewards of the environment by cleaning up federal lands. The day is named after Carl Garner, an American engineer who started an annual clean-up program at Greers Ferry Lake in 1969.
National Grandparents Day
This holiday was first celebrated in 1978 and honors grandparents and grandparent figures whose kindness, love, and support made us the people we are today.
The attacks made on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 left a permanent mark on American history. This holiday remembers all the Americans who perished in the tragedy.
World Clean Up Day
The fact that there are two holidays on this list that emphasize caring for the environment should give you a clue about the importance of this responsibility. Take the time to pick up litter from a busy spot that you pass every day on your way to work. We only have one planet.
Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day)
Constitution Day commemorates the adoption of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787. The holiday also celebrates everyone who has become a US citizen since that point. If you know someone who recently became a citizen, be sure to recognize them on this day.
Air Force Birthday
The US Air Force was founded on September 18, 1947 through President Truman’s signing of the National Security Act. Make sure to thank members of this brave military branch for their service and dedication.
National POW/MIA Recognition Day
This holiday honors prisoners of war and all those who have gone missing in action. It was created when Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act was passed, and it is one of six occasions when the POW/MIA flag can be displayed.
An equinox occurs when the sun “crosses” Earth’s equator, moving southward. In the Northern Hemisphere the day marks the beginning of autumn.
Gold Star Mother’s Day
This holiday remembers all parents whose children died while serving in the Armed Forces. Take time to reflect on the grief and strength of these people whose children made the ultimate sacrifice.
We hope you enjoyed our list of holidays coming up in September. Remember that with a little reflection and purpose, any day can be a special day.
