August is National Eye Exam Month! When is the last time you had your eyes checked? Many don’t realize that just because you don’t have glasses, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to see an optometrist. Even if you have perfect vision, it’s still important to get an eye exam for many reasons. Stay on top of this often-ignored aspect of your health, and discover the importance of eye exams.

Eye Exams and Children

Most of what children learn in school is taught on the blackboard, the projector, or at somewhat of a distance. Because of this, it is absolutely critical that children can see what they’re learning! Not to mention, if a child can’t see, they likely will just stop paying attention. This lack of engagement will negatively impact their performance in the classroom. Be sure to have your child’s vision tested early on and regularly to ensure their success down the road in both school and extracurriculars.

Catch Common Eye Diseases Early

A simple yearly eye exam can help you identify common eye diseases early, many of which have no initial symptoms but lasting impact. For instance, diabetic retinopathy occurs when blood vessels in the back of the eye are damaged. It can occur to anyone who has type 1 or type 2 diabetes. At first, there may be no symptoms but could eventually cause blindness if it goes untreated. Another common eye disease is cataracts, the leading cause of vision loss in the United States according to the CDC. Yearly eye exams can lower the risk of vision loss that comes from these common eye diseases and others like macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Detect Other Health Problems

In addition to eye disease prevention, annual eye exams can also detect other health problems throughout the body, sometimes before your family doctor can. For example, a common early sign of rheumatoid arthritis is dry or burning eyes. Furthermore, eye doctors can detect blood vessel blockages in the back of eyes, meaning a patient has a high risk of stroke. A regular eye exam can also help detect high blood pressure through bulging veins or hemorrhaging at the retina. These patients can then go to a doctor who can prescribe them medication or help them implement a lifestyle change. It’s important to get an annual eye exam, not only for the sake of your vision, but also for the early detection of other health problems.

Many don’t recognize that the importance of eye exams goes beyond simply being able to see. From detecting early health issues to preventing eye diseases that lead to vision loss, schedule your eye exam today. Keep in mind, before scheduling your eye exam, be sure to inquire about the COVID-19 guidelines of the practice to keep yourself and those around you healthy.
