June 18th is National Go Fishing Day! Now that the weather is warm, it’s the perfect time to hit the local pond or river for some fishing. Additionally, fishing is a good socially distant activity! Check out some of the best places to fish around Waldorf.
Open from sunrise to sunset, the Cedarville State Forest is located in Brandywine, Maryland. Here, you will find a 4-acre pond that is stocked with fish such as bluegill, catfish, sunfish, and bass. Keep in mind, the pond is only open for bank fishing. Additionally, be sure that anyone aged 16 or older has a Maryland Non-Tidal fishing license. While you’re there, enjoy the expansive 19.5 miles of hiking trails after you spend some time fishing!
The Merkle Natural Resources Management Area and Visitor Center is located in Upper Marlboro Maryland, about 30 minutes from Waldorf. Enjoy your day fishing in one of the five fishing ponds! Here, you’ll find largemouth bass, bluegill, and many other species. Not only will you find many kinds of fish, but a variety of other wildlife. This area has the largest concentration of Canadian Geese on the Chesapeake Bay’s western shore! Keep in mind, only 2 fishing lines can be in a pond at a time. Be sure to follow all fishing guidelines during your time here. Much like the Cedarville State Forest, you can also enjoy hiking trails in addition to fishing.
Chapel Point State Park is about 25 minutes from Waldorf, offering beautiful views of the Port Tobacco River. Not only can you go fishing, but boating is also permitted. Enjoy a day of fishing out on the water! Keep in mind, a Maryland Bay Sport Tidal License is required.
Smallwood State Park is located in Marbury, Maryland, and is home to a rich history. Named after General William Smallwood, the highest-ranked Marylander in the Revolutionary War, Smallwood State Park houses his historic home. Made up of 628 acres, not only can you enjoy fishing, but there’s camping, picnic areas, trails, and a playground. At Smallwood State Park, you have your pick of where you fish! Perhaps you’ll fish from the shore, or from one of many piers situated along the water. When fishing here, you may find largemouth bass, carp, catfish, and white and yellow perch. Keep in mind, a Chesapeake Bay Sportfishing Licence is required.
There are plenty of places to fish around Waldorf! Enjoy a sunny Saturday out at the water with your family, and be sure to acquire the proper fishing license prior to your excursion. Remember to continue to follow social distancing guidelines in your area, and fishing is a great way to do so.
