International Sudoku Day is on Sunday, September 9th. If you’ve never heard of this interesting game (or if you just want to know how to pronounce its title) you’ve come to the right place!
What is a Sudoku?
Sudoku is a logic-based number game. The word itself means “single number” in Japanese. The pronunciation is “sue-dough-koo.” In order to play, players must fill up a 9×9 grid with the numbers 1 to 9. Each column, row, and 3×3 mini grid contain all 9 digits without repeating. This puzzle engages you mentally and can become quite addicting. Sudoku puzzles vary in difficulty, so choose an easy one if you’re a beginner.
Sudoku History Lesson
The modern version of the puzzle was designed by Howard Garns. He was a retired architect and freelance puzzle constructor from Connersville, Indiana. Initially, Garns’ version of the challenge didn’t surface. In 1979, Dell Magazines featured it under the name “Number Place.”. However, similar games existed prior to this in French magazines leading up to World War II. The French versions varied in similarity to Garns’ creation, but they all involved a 9×9 grid and a limited set of numbers.
After Digital Magazines had published the game for a few years, the puzzle was introduced in Japan by Nikoli in April 1984. Here, it underwent a series of name changes. The first name it took was a sentence meaning, “The digits must be single.” Eventually, this name became “Sudoku.”
In 2004, the game debuted in British and American newspapers, launching it to an unpredictable level of popularity. Since then, different styles have emerged that alter the size of the number grid and impose limitations on number placement. Now, there are Sudoku game shows, apps, computer software, websites, and books filled with Sudoku puzzles.
