February is Black History Month! Black History Month aims to honor the contributions that the Black community has made throughout United States’ history. The idea originated from Carter G. Woodson, who created a week in which schools showcase all that students learn about Black history throughout the school year. Finally, in 1976, it was expanded to Black History Month. This year, learn how you can recognize Black History Month!
Support Black-Owned Businesses
One easy way to celebrate Black History Month is by supporting local, Black-owned businesses. Whether it’s a boutique, a restaurant, or a coffee shop, even buying just one thing is a great way to show support. Not only are you shopping local, but you’re supporting Black business owners! Discover Black-owned businesses in the Waldorf area.
Reading books written by Black authors is one of the best ways to learn about and honor the Black community. This month, perhaps you can start by making a reading list of some books written by Black authors. Fictional books like “The Vanishing Half” and “Such a Fun Age” have both made a splash in the literary world and are well worth the read! Additionally, non-fiction books like “The New Jim Crow” provide information on topics like mass incarceration. Discover some books you’d like to read and create your reading list!
Watch Movies, TV Shows, & Documentaries
Platforms like Netflix have many TV shows, movies, and documentaries that are incredibly educational. If reading isn’t really your “thing,” watching one of these shows or movies is a great way to educate yourself and then share your knowledge with others around you.
Make a Donation
Another proactive way that you can recognize Black History Month is by donating to organizations that preserve history or support the advancement of the Black community. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History strives to spread knowledge about Black history, while the Association of African American Museums supports museums around the world that focus on African and African American history and life. Find an organization that you’d like to support, and donate to directly make a contribution!
Listen to and Share Music
Do you love music? This month and in the months to follow, listen to and share music from Black artists. If you aren’t sure where to start, explore platforms like Spotify! Spotify has a category titled Black History is Now, where you can find everything from music to podcasts. Hear something you like? Share it on social media!
This year, there are many ways to recognize Black History Month without even leaving your home. You might even discover your new favorite restaurant, artist, author, or documentary!
